NEWARK (AP) — A New Jersey appeals court has thrown out the murder conviction of a former leader of the Latin Kings street gang. Jose Negrete, known as “Boom Bat,” was convicted in 2009 of killing Jeri-Lynn Dotson and attempting to murder her roommate, Alex “Alkey” Ruiz in Trenton in 2004. Prosecutors said Dotson was gunned down because she had witnessed Ruiz’s abduction. Negrete was ordered to serve more than 80 years in prison before he would become eligible for parole. Negrete appealed on the grounds that one of the jurors once knew the father of Dotson’s children and disclosed facts about the case that weren’t introduced as evidence. In a ruling published Tuesday, the three-judge appellate panel agreed and wrote that the juror’s misconduct tainted the jury’s deliberations.
