NEWS Players’ development for next level football. As a consequence of rapid changes in competitive football – new trends and superior requirements – the conventional models of youth development are replaced by solutions based on criteria and training methodologies that are solely GOVERNED by high performance objectives. Behind the seen it is accepted that the traditional players’ development approach with subjective talent identification, occasional trials, limited basic skills, common tactics, factor-by-factor training and indifferent individuality CANNOT answer the vast profile complexity of the new breed of players for next level football. The first and foremost condition is to employ a highly advanced early talent discovery criteria which targets not just few native attributes but a COMPLETE TALENT PACKAGE. In the absence of technical seminars and any other channel of disseminating information, the SA coaches and game technicians are not aware of the latest concepts and intensive efforts made in other countries to discover exceptional football talent. As concluded by studies and research data, over 70% of qualities required at the top level of performance in complex sports are INBORN. Consequently, the TALENT PACKAGE addresses “the predictors of talent in football and identifies a number of potentially important and inherited factors such as game intelligence, predispositions for ball skills, agility, aerobic capacity, anaerobic power, body size, psychological profile and susceptibility to injuries. Genotyping for performance-associated DNA polymorphisms at an early age could be useful in predicting later success in football. These data indicate that the likelihood of becoming a football player depends on the carriage of a high number of favourable gene variants.” (Journal of Sports Science- 2014 May). A presentation on these findings was made to SAFA in November 2013. The vast benefits of this TALENT PACKAGE have already provoked radical changes in several countries’ youth development programs. A simplified PRACTICAL CRITERIA (guided by the football DNA findings) have been introduced in those countries to youth coaches at the same time with new training methods that support and maximize dynamic brain stimulation and learning, full scale ball skill acquisition, multi-functional playing ability, superior quality movement, superior physical capacities and complete psychological qualities. Some SA coaches and football teachers have been recently exposed to these latest changes through our workshops. Other possibilities on how to assist local coaches with this vital information are still considered.
