NEWS RELEASE Fiji Sun launches revolutionary interactive paper editions From: Soko Vakacegu, Editorial Manager Fijis biggest daily newspaper, the Fiji Sun, has introduced revolutionary technology to coincide with its coverage of the Fijian elections. The Fiji Sun becomes the first in the region to go interactive through the newspaper itself rather just its website. The Fiji Sun is using what are called QR codes linking newspaper readers directly from the newspaper page to video and audio coverage through scanning with their smartphones. Publisher/CEO Peter Lomas said: Our readers with a smartphone are now able to scan the QR code running alongside the report in the paper. This takes their smartphone straight to video, audio, photo galleries or fuller word details. Its a massive hit with our readers and our staff. For example, in the current election our journalists cover an event with photos and a report in the paper. Same time the QR code published with this links to video coverage they have done. Or an audio recording of a full interview, for example. All our readers have to do is scan this QR code in the paper with their smartphone and the video, audio or other material is available on their smartphone. With so many smartphones in Fiji its opening up a whole new dimension of newspaper coverage and readership. Who says newspapers are dying? Mr Lomas said Fiji Sun staff were trained on using QR codes by Jai Kumar Sharma, a former top editor with the worlds biggest English-language newspaper, the Times of India. Mr Sharma now runs his own international newspaper consultancy and training company, Asia Media Design. Asia Media Design earlier this year worked with Mr Lomas and his team on a redesign of the Fiji Sun.They have done extensive continuing design and infographic training for Fiji Sun staff in Fiji and hosted Fiji Sun staff in India. Indias where its at for newspaper innovation and growth, Mr Lomas said. Our links with India are strong. For example, we have four of our young journalists currently studying at leading Indian universities. Its part of our intensive efforts to build the capacity of our journalists. Same time we empower our readers through new technology.
