NEWS UPDATE AT 3PM WITH ORANGE President Museveni has arrived at Kampala Serena international conference center for the highly anticipated State of the Nation Address with many Ugandans urging the president to discuss the touchy issues of poor service delivery in the health and education sectors; fighting corruption, youth unemployment and human rights among others. Museveni is also expected to give remarks on reports that government will in the next financial year increase taxes on consumer goods to raise funds amidst donor aid suspensions and tax shortfalls. The President’s speech is expected to focus on government’s achievements in the last financial year especially on infrastructure and the planned massive rehabilitation of health facilities among others. He is also expected to discuss steps taken by government to restore confidence in the Electoral reforms amid calls for electoral reforms. The Minister of Education and sports Hon. Jessica Alupo has written to President Museveni seeking guidance on whether to start the process of upgrading the status of Makerere University Business School to an independent University. Alupo says that instead of turning MUBS into a degree-awarding institution as earlier approved by cabinet, it would be better to convert it into a fully-fledged university. Cabinet had proposed ‘Metropolitan Universal Business School ‘as the new name for the institution, that would help maintain the acronym MUBS. In the meantime, MUBS remains affiliated to Makerere University. President Yoweri Museveni has commended the Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) for intensifying Political Education in the army. Speaking at the closing ceremony of a five day retreat organized by the UPDF Commissariat at the National leadership Institute Kyankwanzi; Museveni noted that without political education the army cannot perform. Museveni however Urged the army to maintain discipline The Democratic Republic of Congo has accused Rwanda of protecting M23 rebel leaders wanted for war crimes. However, Rwanda denies the claims that it supported the rebels and says it is co-operating with DR Congos requests. The M23 took up arms in eastern DR Congo in April 2012, accusing the government of marginalising the ethnic Tutsi minority and failing to honour previous peace accords. Leaders of the G7 industrial nations meeting in Brussels say they are prepared to impose further sanctions on Russia over its actions in Ukraine. A joint statement condemned Moscow for its continuing violation of Ukraines sovereignty. The G7 summit is the first since Russia was expelled from the group following its annexation of Crimea in March.
