NEWS UPDATE: As Uganda joins the rest of the world today to mark the World Aids Day, US Ambassador to Uganda, Scott H.DeLisi has urged Ugandans to share responsibility in order to rid the country of HIV/Aids. DeLisi, in a statement, points out that it is essential that the ministries of Health and Finance move quickly and transparently to establish and manage the HIV trust Fund and ensure that resources are targeted towards high impact interventions and key populations that will control the epidemic and maximise the impact of every shilling invested. The world Aids day is a day to remember those we have lost, celebrate the lives saved globally and re-commit ourselves to the continued fight against HIV. This year’s celebrations focus on how to achieve an Aids free generation. Meanwhile, the UN predicts the epidemic will no longer be a global threat in 15 years an if prevention and treatment services are scaled up. Government is finally set to start issuing national identity cards to Ugandan citizens this month, according to Internal Affairs Minister, Gen Aronda Nyakairima. I.Ds will enable authorities crack down on crime, deal with immigration challenges, address the challenge of citizen identification, and enable the Government to plan properly and provide easy access to a wide range of social services and facilities. The first batch of cards will be issued to citizens who successfully registered at enrolment centers in Kampala Capital City. Issuance in other districts will be carried out progressively over the next 9 months. The registration exercise that started in April is still ongoing until February 27 2015.
