NEWS UPDATES AT 12 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. Police has this morning arrested students of Makerere University who were gathered at the constitutional square protesting the way things are run at the public university. They say they pay a lot of tuition fees and yet benefit nothing from it. They also criticized government for not fighting corruption and unemployment. Some of the students have been locked up at Central Police Station. The Constitutional Court has extended the ruling on the legality of the move by President Museveni to reappoint Justice Benjamin Odoki after the Chief Justice clocked the mandatory constitutional retirement age of 70. Justice Remmy Kasule, the lead judge in the case, says the judgment was pushed to August 4th after 4 of the 5 judges expected to preside over the case were absent. The judgment had been fixed for yesterday but since it was Eid, it was not possible and according to judicial practice, in such a case, judgment has to be delivered on the following working day which has also not happened. Minister for youth, Gerald Karuhanga, the petitioner says it’s against the constitution for Odoki to be reappointed. He wants this move to be nullified. Minister of state for gender and culture, Rukia Nakadama has called upon parents especially mothers to fight against early marriages. She believes some of the parents are promoting the habit. This comes after a nationwide survey by Civil Society organizations revealed Bugiri district has the highest incidences of early marriages among girl children with 74% of girls marrying off before 18years. Gaza has seen one of its heaviest nights of bombardment, by air, sea and land, after Israels prime minister warned of a long conflict ahead. Israel carried out 60 air strikes, targeting the TV and radio stations and other sites associated with Hamas, the group which controls Gaza. At least 60 Palestinians were killed.
