NEWS UPDATES AT 8 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. President Museveni has commissioned the construction of Mukono-Katosi/Kisoga-Nyenga road in Kisoga village, Mukono District. He urged Ugandans to use infrastructural projects set up by the government to stamp out poverty in their homes as government is constructing many roads, schools and hospitals, but most of the locals do not take advantage of them. During the commissioning of the road, Museveni warned local politicians against using the project for campaigns. However, several people who were displaced to pave way for the road have not yet been compensated. Minister for works Abraham Byandala, says the 74km road that runs through Mukono and Buikwe districts will be upgraded as an alternative route between Mukono and Jinja. The project is expected to be completed in the next three years. Amid cabinet plans to amend the constitution 1995, Buganda Kingdom has revealed it wants federalism and getting a portion of tax revenue collected from the region to be considered. The premier of the kingdom Charles Peter Mayiga said that the central government needs to give the indigenous establishments their rightful share. He warned that they will oppose any amendments intended to weaken traditional leaders. He was addressing the Buganda Lukiiko yesterday. Following a threat of a sit down strike by the Makerere University staff due to delayed payment of their two-month incentives, the University has two weeks to find a solution for the lecturers. The university spokesperson, Ritah Namisango has said that the institution had projected to raise Shs122.6 billion but fell short of Shs23.1 billion thus being unable to pay the 70 incentive for the months of May and June. The University is doing all it can to investigate the causes of the short fall and management has requested for more time to enable them to address this matter. Israel has carried out more air strikes on the Gaza Strip, following the firing of dozens of rockets on Israel by the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas. At least 15 Palestinians, including two women and one child, were reportedly hurt in the strikes. Former Afghan Finance Minister Ashraf Ghani is leading the race to replace Hamid Karzai as president, according to preliminary results. Mr Ghani won 56.44% of votes in the 14 June run-off, election. His rival Abdullah Abdullah had 43.56%. Mr Abdullah, who fell just short of an outright majority in the first round, rejected the result. Both men have alleged fraud in the election. Votes are being re-checked at more than 7,000 polling stations. They represent nearly a third of centres where votes were cast and correspondents say recounts could significantly alter the result.
