NEWSDAY JANUARY 20, 2 K 14 Beetham Police Post on hold By NALINEE SEELAL Monday, January 20 2014 NATIONAL Security Minister Gary Griffith, who promised to implement plans to construct a police post along the Beetham Highway has placed these plans on the back burner, “for the time being.” Griffith told Newsday there are round the clock patrols in the Beetham area and whatever initiatives the police have put in place, appears to be reaping desired results. He said based on police statistics, crimes along the Beetham Highway seems to have petered out now that an increased police presence is in place. “If something is working, I do not fix it,” Griffith told Newsday. On November 14, following a major upsurge in reports by the motoring public of assaults, shootings and robberies on the Beetham Highway, Griffith said he was going to contact Chief of Defence Staff Major General Kenrick Maharaj to get soldiers from the Engineering Battalion to build a police post in the vicinity of the Beetham Landfill. He said then the post off the Beetham Highway will be manned, on a 24 hour basis, by armed police officers and soldiers. Griffith noted back then that for years, criminals within the Beetham have taken advantage of long lines of traffic along the highway to rob motorists and passengers, sometimes at knife, cutlass and gunpoint. When there is no traffic, the criminals dump debris onto the highway as a means of forcing motorists to stop or slow down their vehicles sufficiently enough for occupants to be robbed. Checks yesterday revealed that officers of the Inter Agency Task Force and Besson Street Police continue to man the Beetham Highway around the clock.
