NEWSDAY JULY 9, 2 K 13 Jack: Face me in public debate By JULIEN NEAVES Tuesday, July 9 2013 CHAGUANAS West candidate Jack Warner has challenged United National Congress (UNC) candidate Khadijah Ameen to a public debate in the final week of the campaign prior to the July 29 bye election. “Let me see if the Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar can help her then,” Warner said. He laid down the challenge last night during a cottage meeting at La Paille Gardens in Caroni held after a walkabout in the area. He also challenged Ameen to resign as chairwoman of the Tunapuna/Piarco Regional Corporation. “Vacate the desk you are sleeping on,” he quipped. Warner, political leader of the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) said Ameen has been, “holding on to the coattails” of the Prime Minister and challenged her to have a walkabout or cottage meeting without Persad-Bissessar present. He said this was the politics of the 1960s and not even current People’s National Movement political leader Dr Keith Rowley engaged in such behaviour. Warner last night claimed that the ILP, which he launched last Friday, has accepted 7,166 members from areas in Laventille, Moruga and Cedros. He said that come July 29, he is expecting 50,000 members. He told the audience that the play park in which they were meeting was neglected for ten years but he revived it when he was a Cabinet minister, having the grass cut and lights installed. He said Ameen as a councillor, neglected the park with grass growing high and the bulbs burnt out. The promise of a jogging path, he said, was not kept. “If you can’t take care of a recreation park how the hell you will take care of an entire constituency,” he asked to loud cheers. He promised residents that the park’s grass would be cut in a day’s time and by two weeks, they will get their jogging path. He said he felt sorry for Ameen whom he claimed was being “used and abused” by the same people who will later “spit her out” following the election. Earlier yesterday Warner submitted his nomination papers at the Elections and Boundaries Commission in Chaguanas
