NEWSFLASH! Proposed statutory guidance to ensure pupils with medical conditions receive appropriate support in schools has been published. AYME and its members have been actively involved in the consultation process, and the guidance now has a much stronger emphasis on training for all school staff and overall key points raised by ourselves and partner charities have been listened to and included. Key points to note are: • There is now mention of the need for flexibility when a child might receive a combination of AP and part time school and when a child will be reintegrated back into school after a period of absence • This version now states that where a child is returning to school following a period of hospital education or AP, schools should work with the local authority and education provider to ensure that the individual healthcare plan identifies the support the child will need to reintegrate effectively • It now says that schools should show an understanding of how medical conditions impact on a child’s ability to learn and that where a child has SEN but does not have a statement or EHC plan, their special educational needs should be mentioned in their individual healthcare plan. All positive changes, but there is still one major issue which needs addressing. The guidance still states that whilst ‘they will often be essential’ not all children with medical needs will need an individual healthcare plan and that if consensus cannot be reached on whether one is needed, the headteacher is best placed to take a final view. This may well present issues for our members and we will continue to do all we can to have this amended. We hope you find this update helpful.
