NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2013 So that was winter? Goes without saying it certainly didn’t feel like it. Rainfall has been low and we could do with a good drop. June recorded 69.6mm, July 25.2mm & August 18.6mm. A BIG ‘Thank You’ to everyone who supported us during our 10th Birthday ‘week long’ sale. It was a great week TREV’S GARDEN TIPS Spring has sprung and with it warmer weather making plants and lawns grow and flower again. Because of the lack rain lately, plants haven’t sprung to life as quickly as previous years. Water plants well so the water gets right down to the bottom roots. Fertilise all plants with a complete fertiliser and cow/mushroom compost to give the plants the best start to the season. After this make sure that you mulch well to preserve the water as much as possible but keep mulch away from the stems to stop collar rot. To prevent petal blight in azaleas, spray with Mancozeb and avoid overhead watering. Spray roses with Lime sulphur to help prevent black spot and aphids. Mango trees here in the Hastings area suffer badly from anthracnose which is a disease that kills the flowers and new fruit turning them black. This mostly happens when we have wet weather during flowering of which we haven’t had, so fingers crossed on a bumper crop. Spray entire tree if possible with Copper oxychloride at fortnightly intervals until flowering has finished. Rejuvenate those tired house plants which have become pot bound with our Lush Growth potting mix. It is full or coir peat which holds moister well and also contains osmocote for fertiliser. LAWNS: Give your lawn a good feed now to help strangle out the weeds that make their way into your lawn in winter. Also give the lawn a dose of lime to sweeten up the soil, which should be done every second year. Now is also the time to returf, seed and top dress your lawn. If your lawn has become spongy, start cutting it down to a low setting like 3 and rake out all the thatch (dead grass). Your lawn will look terrible for a month but will come back a lot better and easier to mow. VEGETABLES: Sow or plant beans, beetroot, capsicum, carrots, celery, eggplant, herbs, spring onions, melon, potatoes, radish, rhubarb, silver beet, shallots, sweet corn, squash, tomatoes and zucchini. Keep pest down with a weekly dose of natural Pyrethrum or Dipel. Come check out our large range of organic seeds and local seedlings PRODUCT OF THE MONTH Lush Growth Potting Mix A premium potting mix ideal for herbs, vegies, fruit trees, roses, potted colour & more.
