NEWSPAPER STORIES COMPILED FOR THURSDAY 13-02-2014 THE NATION Page 2:- PICTURE: National Leader, All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu (2nd right); Governor State of Osun, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola (right); his Deputy, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori; Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) South West Chairman, Bishop Magnus Atilade (left); Former Osun CAN Chairman, Evangelist Abraham Aladeseye (middle 2nd row); Director General, Bureau of Social Services (BOSS), Mr Femi Ifaturoti (2nd row-right) and other Bishops, during the APC National Leader’s Peace Meeting with South West CAN in Osogbo…yesterday Page 48:- Osun govts’s peace efforts “The news of some pupils of Baptist High School, in Iwo, Osun State, appearing in school in choir uniforms was really hilarious. I sure had a good laugh when I heard of it. I tried to imagine what went trough the minds of teachers and others as the pupils filed into the school with the uniforms.” Page 58:- Here come Made-in-Nigeria phones “The first assembly cplant for mobile phones, tablets, laptops, personal computers (PCs) and accessories in Nigeria has been inaugurated in Ilesha,. The meeting was meant to address the crisis caused by the new education policy of the state Governor, Rauf Aregbesola. The meeting, which was held behind closed door in the Government House, lasted for three hours. While Tinubu and Aregbesola led the government’s team, the Chairman of CAN in the South-West, Bishop Magnus Atilade, and CAN chairman in Osun State, Rev. Elisha Ogundiya, led other clergymen to the meeting. It was gathered that Tinubu, who is one of the national leaders of the All Progressives Congress, appealed to the religious leaders to sheathe their swords, but the leadership of CAN was said to have maintained its stand on the issues. Tinubu, while briefing journalists after the meeting, said he was in the state to make sure that there was no religious crisis. He said, “We are in the state because of the concern for the future of our children knowing full well that education is the greatest weapon against poverty. For schoolchildren who, ideally, should be racking their heads to solve mathematical equations – like their mates in other parts of the world – to be used by politicians to fight a proxy war shows that these kids are not getting the right kind of learning. Talk of the “miseducation” of the Nigerian child. The school is a place where children should learn mutual tolerance. If pupils cannot learn – early enough – to accommodate their mates of other faiths, at what stage of their lives will they do so? This is why I think public schools can at least be the vanishing point where fundamentalist zeal can be attenuated. There is already enough religion in the atmosphere for a Nigerian child to absorb, schools need not contribute to it. Certain rituals like “morning devotion” which is actually “Christian” in outlook should be scrapped and no specific religious culture entertained. Parents, who think their child has not received sufficient moral instructions in the home or at the various religious centres, should not yield the indoctrination process to schools. They should simply try harder or opt for private schools. The PDP NWC, at its meeting in Abuja, on Tuesday, fixed the primaries resolved to hold in Ekiti for March 15, while the one for Osun was scheduled for April 5.” Page 8:- Mediates in educational crisis in Osun National leader of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Wednesday in Osogbo, took a swipe at the proposed national confab being organised by the Federal Government, describing it as deceptive and diversionary. He said it amounted to a deceit on the part of President Goodluck Jonathan to organise such a conference at the twilight of his government, bearing in mind the 2015 general election, contending that all moves by the government over the proposed confab were geared towards hoodwinking Nigerians. Speaking in a chat with journalists at the Oke Fia Government House after a closed door meeting with Governor Rauf Aregbesola and representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) over the recent crisis in the government reclassification of schools and controversy on uniforms, Senator Tinubu asserted that “I see the diversionary tactics of Mr President. What is the constitutional conference without enabling act going to achieve?” He added: “Such a conference is diversionary, deceptive. If on the eve of election that will terminate the government you are organising a national confab, what are you trying to do? Now that the National Assembly had devoted much time on the review of the constitution, I don’t see how we are going to achieve a new constitution without a referendum. We are talking as if we are confused. But, I am not confused. I have a clear mind and idea of what is going on. I know when I am being deceived.” See more at: tribune.ng/news2013/index.php/en/news/news-headlines/item/33340-proposed-national-confab-is-deceptive,-diversionary-tinubu-%E2%80%A2mediates-in-educational-crisis-in-osun.html Page 10:- Osun forum elects former LAUTECH VC as president “Osun forum has elected a former Vice Chancellor of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, Professor Babatunde Adeleke, as its President. The election, which took place at the Forum’s Annual General Meeting, held at the forum building in Osogbo, is for a period of two years with effect from January 2014. The forum also commended Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola , for the relative peace in the State, which according to him has been the catalyst to the unprecedented transformational development going on the in all the nukes and crannies of the State.” Page 18:- Aregbesola, dump new Osun education policy Governor Rauf Aregbesola should dump the new Osun education policy in the interest of peace in the state. For some time now, we have been hearing of misunderstanding between Muslims and Christians as a result of the merger of schools. Although, the governor means well for the people, there are times we must take certain actions, not because we are cowards, but in the interest of peace. I hope the governor can simply return to how the schools were before the merger. Nothing is too much to sustain peace in the state. tribune.ng/news2013/index.php/en/component/k2/item/33298-aregbesola,-dump-new-osun-education-policy.html Page 27:- The Osun govt needs revert itself on its education policy-President, old students Prof. Soji Aremu, a 1983 graduate of Baptist High School, Iwo, Osun State, is the president of the old Students’ Association of the school. He speaks to Tayo Lewis, on the crisis which engulfed his alma mater last week. What really is the kernel of the problem at Baptist High School Iwo? The problem at Baptist High School, Iwo, founded in February 1955 has to do with the fallout of the education policy of the Osun State governor, Rauf Aregbesola. The reclassification policy brought about some other attendant elements or sub policies that are not in the overall interest of education and learners. The school merger necessitated the movement of students from the school they freely chose to attend, and in which they have imbibed the tradition and culture. The sudden movement of students definitely would affect academic, social-cultural and religious self-concepts of such students who were ill-prepared for the sudden movement occasioned by the school merger. One of the attendant problems is the of wearing of hijab to Baptist High School, Iwo, a tradition that is totally alien to a school that will be 60 years old next year. Stakeholders, which include Old Students Association (SOSAHIB) kicked against it. Amuda spoke in Osogbo during the 2014 budget defence before the House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation. “The budgeted sum will be used in the construction of 93 kilometres of roads in all the local government areas of the state,’’ he said. The special adviser explained further that three kilometres road would be constructed in each of the 30 local government areas in the state. Amuda said the 93 kilometres of road projects would be in addition to the ongoing 10-kilometre road projects in the LGAs. He said further that N6 billion had been provided in the 2014 budget to commence the project. Amuda, however, said the Ministry of Works might come up with a supplementary budget later in the year to finance the project. The scheme was launched on February 4, 2013 as part of the administration’s Six-point Integral Action Plan of the current government in the state. Without mincing words, activities of the agency are to complement various other programmes put in place to turn around the health care delivery system in the state. At inauguration, Governor Rauf Aregbesola raised grave concern on carnage on some of the roads in the state where he observed that many promising lives had been lost and property worth millions of naira were lost to fire incidences and other disasters. “Response to emergencies like road traffic accidents, natural disasters like floods, fire incidents and medical emergencies by health personnel has not been prompt for many reasons. Many victims of road traffic accidents and other disasters could have been saved had responses to accidents and emergencies been prompt and had health workers been provided with the necessary tools to function efficiently and effectively,” the governor lamented. The scheme not only meant to give rapid medical response and provide prompt rescue of accident victims, but also to provide a good referral system by transferring patients from primary to tertiary health facilities for specialists intervention and care of medically challenged elders. However, a Ghana-based IT devices manufacturer, RLG Communications, has set up the first phone and laptop manufacturing plant in Nigeria, a development that has huge economic benefits for the country. KUNLE AZEEZ reports. Nigeria is currently adjudged one of the fastest-growing telecoms markets in the world, coupled with a large market of over 170 million population, which is a factor that has continued to drive Information Technology investors into the country. Directly linked to the growth in the industry is the availability of various Information technology and Communication devices such as phones, tables and laptops all of which are imported into the country by foreigners as finished good and to be sold in Nigeria. Meanwhile, as these foreign devices manufacturers sell their IT products, they repatriate money realised to their home countries, underscoring Nigeria as continuous benefactor of economic losses, as the foreign firms’ pattern of business result in huge capital flight for the country. The leadership of the Commission has consistently assured the nation that the bar in the conduct of election in Nigeria, which was raised in 2011 will be sustained. Although there were few problems and challenges the Commission had to contend with, the election was adjudged far better than previous elections conducted by the Commission. Learning from experience of the general elections and factoring those lessons into preparations for the governorship elections in other States, namely: Kogi, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Sokoto, Edo and Ondo, the Commission has strived to make its performance in the conduct of election in one State better than the previous exercises. At sundry public engagements with stakeholders, the Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega maintained that, though there was a remarkable improvement in the conduct of elections in the country, as attested to by local and International observers, a lot needs to be done to sanitize the electoral system in Nigeria. He was quick to state that it was not a perfect election, not because INEC planned it to be so but because the Commission is operating in an imperfect system where extraneous factors interfere with its plans. The “RLG/Adulawo Technology City,” as the facility is being called will be involved in the training of youths who will assemble and repair various electronic devices as well as produce items from the factories. In addition, it is expected to create over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs. Speaking at the official launch of the city, Mr. Roland Agambire, Group Chairman of RLG, noted that the objective of the project was to complement government’s effort at diversifying the economy, adding that, since ICT was the new money spinner, the RLG/Adulawo Technology City was an ambitious project that would play a major role in the technology revolution coming to Nigeria. He noted that the dream for setting up such a facility was propelled by the leadership and vision of the state Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, whom he said supported the idea from the outset, especially as it has creation of jobs and the transfer of technology as key objectives. He stated that although Africa is the wealthiest continent, it has not been able to maximise its potentials. “RLG, as a pan-African company, has the ambitious dream of creating wealth for African youths and leading them out of poverty through technology,” he said. Fielding questions from newsmen after a closed door meeting with the Osun State government officials led by Governor Rauf Aregbesola and leaders of the state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN ,over the crisis arising from the new education policy in the state, Tinubu stated that the party’s presidential candidate would emerge through an open and transparent system. He expressed confidence that the party would take over from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, at the centre next year, stressing that the success of the just concluded registration exercise of party membership across the country was an attestation that the party was on the path of winning the 2015 presidential election. Tinubu allayed fears of possible crisis in the process of selecting the party’s flag bearer, saying that there had never been crisis in the party and there would not be any crisis even after the selection of the party’s acceptable candidate. Dr Dare, who is also the Chief Medical Director of Hope Medical Centre in Ila Orangun, Osun state, in this interview, gives a thumb up to the Aregbesola administration for transforming the state. Excerpts: WHAT is your opinion on the school reclassification policy in Osun State? I sincerely believe that the vilification of the governor as a result of his decision is unfair. When he came on board, what he met on ground was nothing to write home about- there was no sense of direction. As a matter of fact, the reclassification is to rejuvenate the education sector in the state. We have a system that does not have a sense of direction and does not have a policy template. Now that we have seen a governor that is focused, I think those criticizing him are doing that out of ignorance. But don’t you think it is contributing to the confusion in the education sector of the state? As a matter of fact, some of us believe that whether you are a Christian or you are a Muslim, the bottom line is, ‘are you getting the right kind of education?’ Are you being given what you should get from the government? In any case, good education does not have to be provided by any religion. The 25 ethnic nationalities represented at the forum, canvassed an all-inclusive agenda in the forthcoming confab being organised by the Federal Government. The groups, which expressed optimism at the possibility of using the opportunity offered by the conference to move the country forward, also faulted the composition of the delegates. Speaking at the opening of the two-day mini-conference of ethnic nationalities organised under the auspices of Ethnic Nationalities Movement, ENM, chairman of The Patriots and a foremost constitutional lawyer, Professor Ben Nwabueze, said any conference that excluded discussion on the right to self-determination by the ethnic nationalities had not done justice to the aspirations of the people. True federalism Governor of Osun State, Rauf Aregbesola, who said the country needed restructuring, advocated the return to true federalism as the only way to ensure equity, justice and vibrancy in the country. The governor, who was represented by the Senior Special Assistant, Research, Planning and Policy Implementation, Mr. Olusegun Bada, said ethnic nationalities should form the bedrock of a sovereign conference to resolve the burning issues affecting the nation’s existence. “With true federalism, we will have a mutually evolved system where none of the federating units is inferior to another, and each derives its powers and exercises them within the framework of the constitution. “To be sure, at a time in our history when true federalism was practised based on the regions, the country as a whole was better for it. It was the days when each region thrived on its own resources, cocoa in the Western Nigeria, palm kernel in the East and groundnuts in the north, “ he said. The new education policy of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, in reclassifying schools in the state and the ill-advised decision to build an Open Heaven Worship Centre are the Siamese public decisions that are capable of causing crisis in the state, if not curbed without further delay. The subsisting and persisting furore over the reclassification of public schools has worsened and getting to the boiling point such that the state’s chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) had given the state governor, Rauf Aregbesola, an ultimatum to rescind the decision. The state government had defended the merger because it was one of the main recommendations of the State’s Education Summit, which was organized to reverse the perceived decay in the state’s education sector when it took over reign of office, in 2010. The level of decadence of the schools was so severe that it could promote neither teaching nor learning. To worsen matters, teachers were also lacking, in terms of prerequisite qualification and standard. Hence, any serious government that is interested in public education, as a means of developing its human capital base should take urgent steps to reverse the deterioration; but not the way it is going about it.
