NFF election: Committee throws it open: The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) electoral committee constituted at the weekend in Warri by congress has thrown open the electoral process, declaring that all the nation’s football stakeholders who are eligible to contest should come forward and fight for a place in the new board. Chairman of the electoral committee, Mr. Samson Ebomhe said yesterday in Abuja moments after his committee and the Appeals Committee were officially inaugurated that the election, which comes up on September 30 in Warri is one that would be open to all Nigerian football stakeholders. His words: “There is opportunity now for those who were previously not involved. I also want to let it be known that all those who have previously been cleared for the elections need no fresh clearance. All they need to do is indicate their willingness to be involved in the elections.” Giving details of schedule, Ebomhe disclosed that the sale of form, which started yesterday (Monday) will close on Wednesday (tomorrow), to be followed immediately by the screening of the candidates. A final list of the qualified candidates will be released on Thursday, while protests and appeals are to be heard on Friday, the September 26, four days before the election. It would be recalled that at last weekend’s extra-ordinary general assembly in Warri, the congress had, in line with FIFA directive, elected persons into a new NFF Electoral Committee and also into a new NFF Electoral Appeals Committee, while setting the date of Tuesday, September 30, 2014 for elections. The NFF President, Aminu Maigari while inaugurating the two committees yesterday in Abuja, charged them to be transparent, free and fair. Maigari, who is away in Zurich on FIFA assignment, but was represented by Hon Suleiman Yahaya-Kwande told the committee members that the over-riding importance of free and fair, and credible elections cannot be over-emphasized. “The General Assembly has put this onerous responsibility on your shoulders because they believe you are persons of integrity, and the NFF also has faith in your ability to deliver,” Yahaya-Kwande stated. Responding, both Ebomhe and Mr. Okey Ajunwa (chairmen of the Electoral and Appeals committees respectively) used the opportunity to declare their readiness to do a thorough job, with credible and transparent elections as the bedrock.
