NHIS to include public primary schools pupils in scheme The National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on Monday said it would soon include all pupils in the public primary schools across the country in the scheme. Mr Nasiru Ikharo, the Lagos Zonal Coordinator of NHIS, said in Lagos that the plan was in line with the Federal Government’s mandate to increase NHIS coverage from the present five per cent to 30 per cent by 2015. He said that although 2015 was just few months away, ``the NHIS intends to increase coverage by 17 per cent in 2014 and increase national coverage to 30 per cent by 2015”. ``The Federal Government has given NHIS the mandate to actualise 30 per cent coverage by 2015. ``We have mapped out strategies of rolling out our programmes across the country in order for us to get the figure. ``Before the end of this year, we hope to actualise about 17 per cent. ``We are going to be covering all pupils in public primary schools across the country; that will give us about 24 million individuals. ``We are also looking at covering children under five and pregnant women across the country and across the board; we will be registering them, that will increase the number. ``We believe that if we combine that with our present formal sector programme we should be able to actualise our number by 2015.” Ikharo said that the scheme was partnering major telecommunication companies in the country to facilitate the coverage.
