NIGERIAN ARMY MOVES TO INFLUENCE EDUCATION POLICIES IN NIGERIA Udeme Utip, Uyo The Nigerian Army (NA) has declared its intention to influence and give impetus to educational policies in Nigerian through the Nigerian Army Education Corps (NAEC). The Commander, Corps of Education of the Nigerian Army, Brig. Gen. Sunday Adebayo, made the declaration on arrival in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom state capital for a four day Education Summit organized by NAEC. According to the Commander, the Education summit as proposed by NAEC is to critically assess the position of the nation’s education sector with the view to proffer solution and make suggestion for improvement in the sector. “Precisely, the summit is intended to stimulate new policies and influence the existing ones to take the system to the next level. This will invariably chart the way forward for the education system in Nigeria.” Adebayo explained. Giving a brief history of the programme, the commander mentioned that NAEC was established primarily to provide educational services to the Nigerian Army hence the establishment of the first Command Children School in (CCS) at Yaba in 1966, the Command Secondary School (CSS) at Ipaja-Lagos in 1977. He said a total of 39 CCSs as well as 21 CSSs have so far been established in Nigeria eve as NAEC also oversees the Nigerian Army School of Education (NASE), where various courses, including an Executive Management course and NCE are run. According to him, the aim of setting up these schools was to provide qualitative but affordable education for service personnel/civilians and their children/wards. “Without any equivocation, it can be said that this aim has been largely achieved” he maintained. He however expressed the desire of the NA to have the Nigerian Educational sector surmount its contemporary challenges and perform enhanced role in nation building. To achieve this, the commander says 11 distinguished professionals in the education sector, including the Hon. Minister for Education Chief Nyeson Wike, have been lined up to deliver papers on the contemporary issues as it affects the Nigerian Education system. He says the ultimate aim of the summit with the theme: ‘Education Sector Development in Nigeria: Tackling Contemporary Challenges’ was to compile the series of lectures into a book that will serve both as a reference material and a veritable guide for education stakeholders.
