NIPC threatens to expose those seeking boss sacking The Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission has raised the alarm that certain “disgruntled elements”, who have “vested interest” have been working within and outside the commission to discredit its investment drive. It threatened to expose those behind the campaign of calumny if they do not stop their campaign against the agency. The commission, in a statement on Monday, said while the NIPC under its new Executive Secretary, Mrs Saratu Umar, had been working hard to reposition the commission for better service delivery, those who had benefitted from the deficiencies in the system, had vowed to frustrate these efforts. Umar had in recent weeks come under intense pressure from some groups calling for her immediate sacking. Specifically, the National Democratic Front last week protested that her appointment by President Goodluck Jonathan did not follow due process. But the commission, in the statement in Abuja said, “Since the appointment of the current NIPC Executive Secretary, efforts are being made by certain misguided and disgruntled elements within and outside the NIPC to discredit the person and the office of the Executive Secretary. “The Executive Secretary upon assumption of office in May realised that NIPC was run arbitrarily with inadequate systems, policies, processes and procedures. “Chaos was the order of the day, personal interest of a few was being pursued at the expense of the majority and also of the nation.” The statement added that having realised all the anomalies in the system, Umar decided to put in place procedures to make the NIPC a strong institution in order to drive its mandate of attracting foreign direct investment. It said however that those who wanted the irregularities in the system to continue had resolved to discredit the reforms. “If these elements do not desist from this anti-change attitude and being enemies of the NIPC and Nigeria, we may have no option than to avail the public the details of their past corrupt practices,” the statement concluded.
