NIT Manipur - A story sent by Local student || share || sir With all due respect I have the honour to state that there has been news of an incident of brawl in NIT Manipur, Langol between local and non-local students of the institute all over the internet (Facebook, Twitter, Reddit, etc.) and newspapers (The Hindu, The Times of India, The Indian Express, The Deccan Chronicles, and local newspapers of Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and UP). I am here to clarify that the news reported in all these sources were extremely exaggerated to the highest possible level and mostly false. Even there are additions of very alarming false reports and incidents. The true and full accounts of the incident that actually occurred are as follows: The 11th of September, 2014 (7:45 pm): The 1st year students were assembled in the mess hall for dinner. Then and there, a non-local student (Prince Raj of CSE branch from Bihar) broke the queue ignoring his fellow mates who were standing there before him. A local student requested him to keep the queue like everyone else and wait for his turn, but he got furious and a quarrel started between them. And intentionally, a non-local student who was initially not at all involved came running to the spot and hit the local student in the face. The locals who were in the queue tried to keep peace between the two. But, the non-locals would not comply and even used force against the peacemakers. One of them (Abhishek Raj of Branch Civil from Bihar) even went to the extent of removing his belt and striking against a local who was trying to make peace. That was when the locals too rushed in, resulting in a chaos which merely lasted not more than a minute or two. The 2nd year students along with the warden, supervisor and the security guards came to control the situation. Meanwhile, some of the non-locals were already in their rooms taking up arms (in the likes of iron rods, sticks and belts). Some of them even threatened the warden and supervisor grabbing them by the collar when they tried to reason with them. Slowly but surely, the situation came under control and all the students in the hostel were assembled in the hostel lawn. Then the reason for the outbreak was discussed and sorted out. All those involved apologized to one another and compromised. It is to be noted that none of the 2nd year students (both local and non- local) were involved. By the end, not a single non-local can be accounted as injured whereas one of the locals sustained a cut on the forehead as a consequence of being hit at by a belt. The incident came to a close then and there. The 12th of September, 2014 (5:00 pm): A group of local students were playing football at the hostel lawn when suddenly; some non- locals came rushing in and among them, one with a cut on his face. They disrespectfully scattered the paper works of security guard shouting all sorts of dirty slogans, blaming the institute’s name on their way in. The next thing they did was hit a local senior 2nd year student, who was at the time, peacefully playing football, with a leather belt. (The indifferent behaviour of those who came running in was due to the fact that they had a fight with some youths outside the hostel campus, as was found later. They themselves testified that the youths were not students of NIT Manipur. The reason behind the fight and the persons responsible for it still remains unknown). Following the out roar, all the students came out of their respective rooms causing a chaos yet again. Then it was followed by exchange of harsh words amongst both the sides. Some students, both local and non-locals tried to play the Good Samaritan by making peace, which came to no avail. The non-locals were confined near the entrance of the mess hall which has a gate. The locals angered by the injury of a fellow mate for no reason, called out for them to come out if they were to fight. Suddenly a 2nd year non-local open the, what was a closed gate, and they took to stones and started to hurl them at the locals. They were given a much similar but a lighter response from the local side too, as they hurl fist-sized stones at each other. The non- locals, being larger in number with around thirty heads, slowly gained ground and chased the other side towards the entrance of the hostel. Then a policeman who was posted just outside the campus intervened to disperse the crowd, which didn’t get a response as should have. By the time the backup policemen arrived, all the locals were out of the hostel campus whereas the non-locals were inside, still hurling stones at anyone in front of them, regardless of they may be. That’s when the police arrived to control the mob, where a non-local grabbed the collar of a policeman, thereafter security personnel came and within a few hours, the situation was under control. All in all, eight students were injured out of which four were locals and four were non-locals. The injured were taken to the hospital immediately and were discharged the same night. None sustained major injuries. The 13th of September, 2014 (Afternoon): The hostel was graced by the visit of The honourable Chief Minister of Manipur, Shri Okram Ibobi Singh, The Director of NIT Manipur, The DGP of Manipur, The Minister of Education (s), Manipur and other distinguished office holders of Manipur. The non-local students were carrying backpacks and told the CM that they wanted ten days leave to go home as they claimed that their lives were in danger. The CM assured that he would provide them with more security, to which the non-locals would not comply. To this, the local students requested them not to go. After spending almost two hours, the Chief Minister along with all the dignitaries left. Later in the evening IRB (Indian Reserve Battalion) arrived to secure the campus. And CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) were deployed the next day onwards. The report written above is true to the best of my knowledge and the validity of this report can be verified by contacting the Institute or the Manipur Police. As mentioned earlier, the news published in most of the newspapers all over the country is not entirely true, most of them made up along the way and their sources are questionable. It will do everyone good if you would kindly publish the truth of the incident as mentioned. The parents of the non-local need not worry as the situation is completely under control. Furthermore, the epidemic where the media spreads needs to be reconsidered as the nation’s integrity depends on them. Your cooperation is much needed here. Thank You. Yours truly NIT Manipur students
