NKANDLA SCANDAL Media Statement issued by COPE for immediate release 20 March 2014 The Congress of the People noted the content of the investigation report titled “SECURE IN COMFORT” which was released by the Office of the Public Protector of the Republic of South Africa yesterday, 19 March 2014. The report is the result of an intensive investigation over a period of more than 2 years by the Office of the Public Protector. The investigation conducted into allegations of impropriety and unethical conduct relating to the installation and implementation of security and related measures at the private residence of the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency J G Zuma, at Nkandla in KwaZulu-Natal. The report contains almost 450 pages and is still scrutinised by the National Executive of the Congress of the People, assisted by a team of experts in constitutional and criminal law. The thorough body of proof contained in the report, levelled against President Jacob Zuma and several senior cabinet ministers is a devastating indictment on the Office of the President. The Constitution of the Republic and more than a dozen other laws have been violated. The consequences in terms of relevant legislation for serious transgressions like these are severe and we are mindful that the potential of a constitutional dilemma cannot be ruled out at this time. The Congress of the People noted the decision by other political parties to approach law enforcement offices in Nkandla and Pretoria in this regard this morning. We are still in consultation with our advisors as well as the five other member parties in the COLLECTIVE FOR DEMOCRACY to finalize our position on the way forward. The President of COPE will address the Cape Town Press Club at 12:00 this afternoon at: 6 Spin Street Restaurant, Cape Town to provide a progress report on our plans to ensure that the remedial action ordered by the Public Protector will be implemented to the letter.
