NLP: FRIEND OR FOE Here is a fast start-up for those that want to wake up to what NLP can be doing to them and for them in their world. So what is it and what can it do? According to Robert B. Dilts, of the NLP University: “NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming, a name that encompasses the three most influential components involved in producing human experience: neurology, language and programming. The neurological system regulates how our bodies function, language determines how we interface and communicate with other people and our programming determines the kinds of models of the world we create. Neuro-Linguistic Programming describes the fundamental dynamics between mind (neuro) and language (linguistic) and how their interplay affects our body and behavior (programming).” He says “NLP was originated by John Grinder (linguistics) and Richard Bandler (gestalt therapy) for the purpose of making explicit models of human excellence.” They used the work of hypnosis legend Milton H. Erickson, M.D. and the verbal and behavioral patterns he developed. Overall NLP is a vehicle that reaches our subconscious mind directly to get a change in beliefs, thought patterns etc. Actually NLP can work whether we realize it or not. The situation to consider is: Is it being used in a therapeutic way, or in a more unaware manipulative way? Here is an interesting clip from English master entertainer and NLP expert Derren Brown. In it he gets large numbers of people in a shopping mall to raise their hands “on command” simply by immersing them in NLP speech patterns. zengardner/nlp-friend-or-foe/
