NO on zQuestion 1 Dear Friends, Im very concerned about Tuesdays election, so Im writing to respectfully ask that you vote NO on Question 1 on Tuesday….and for you to ask 10 friends to also Vote NO on Question 1 tomorrow. Question 1 is about the safety of the Commonwealth’s roads and bridges. There are 27 bridges in the state that have been closed and another 447 that carry reduced traffic due to the age and disrepair of those bridges. The 10 busiest structurally deficient bridges in the state carry over one million cars every day. And more than one in five major roadways in the state is classified as being in poor condition. This neglect of our infrastructure plays out on the news every day. A few weeks ago, a large pothole in Sutton damaged 50 cars. A month ago, the City of Boston was forced to close the bridge to Long Island due to serious safety concerns. And less than 90 days ago, falling debris from a Chelmsford overpass crashed onto a family’s car traveling on I-495, shattering the windshield. There are stories like this all over the Commonwealth. If Question 1 passed, it would take away over $1 billion dollars over the next 10 years needed to repair these unsafe roads and bridges. You should rightfully ask why then should this even be on the ballot? The answer is that the proponents of Question 1 do not like that the existing law would raise the gas tax in the future based on the rate of inflation. Other than a tiny 3 cent increase last year - the gas tax had not been raised since 1991-----22 years later. No wonder there are not enough funds to repair our bridges and roads. What is the cost if you vote NO on Question 1? It’s about $12 a year for the average family. I think you would agree with me that is a small price to pay for your safety when traveling in your car. The Committee supporting NO on Question 1 (meaning do not allow the repeal of indexing the gas tax to inflation) includes AAA of New England, which has publicly stated that Question 1 is about public safety on the state’s roads and bridges. Major business groups like the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, Massachusetts Taxpayers Foundation, A Better City, The Massachusetts Competitive Partnership, The Business Roundtable, and Associated Industries of Massachusetts, have joined with ACEC/MA, CIM and leading environmental organizations and statewide other civic and political leaders in opposing Question 1. These are organizations and individuals who many times are on opposite sides of other policy issues. But on Question 1, they all agree that voting NO on Question 1 is the right decision. This will be a close election and every vote matters. Please get to the polls tomorrow for Election Day and send this email to ten of your friends and family members, post on Facebook and LinkedIn, and tweet to your list. It is important that everyone is educated on what is at stake here. Government has basic functions no matter what political party you belong to------one of those duties is keeping its citizens safe when they travel on the bridges and roads in the Commonwealth. This is not Republican or a Democratic vote, but a vote for protecting the safety of the motoring public. · You can link to the NO on 1 Committee website for more information: saferoadsbridges · Or watch this video to learn more: youtu.be/RSkaJmMA6ks?list=PLzPXXxjTp6xf2tV5XJfdb6VBafbfgQicm Thank you for your consideration and I hope you can join me and AAA of Southern New England in voting NO on Question 1 on Election Day.
