NORTHERN LEADERS ROBBED NIGERIA....NIGER DELTA INTEGRITY GROUP The Niger Delta Integrity Group rose from a meeting in Uyo this morning to reassess the political economy of the Nigerian State. The Group, which met at Ibom Hotel and Resorts, reappraised the political goings-on in the nation. Top on the agenda of the meeting was youth unemployment, insecurity especially the Boko Haram monster, infrastructure and general governance. The Niger Delta Integrity Group took a short historical excursion into the political history of Nigeria. Following the Coup d’état of 15th January 1966, General Aguiyi Ironsi became head of State only to be killed about 6 months after by General T.Y.Danjuma and the Hausa-Fulani conspirators. Thereafter, the baton of power swung into the hands of General Yakubu Gowon, who was also sympathetic to the existing Hausa-Fulani hegemony. Murtala Muhammad who overthrew him was in turn over thrown by Suwa Bukar Dimka. It was only a Southerner General Olusegun Obasanjo who hurriedly handed over power to Shehu Usman Aliyu Shagari. Muhammed Buhari overthrew Shagari and imposed a draconian rule. IBB – the self-acclaimed maradona took his turn and for close to 9 years his transition programme failed. IBB not only legalized corruption but became a naira humpty-dumpty. Ernest Shonekan’s ruke for 82 days was deliberatetly contrived to pave the way for another coup, this time around by a maximum ruler Sani Abacha. Abdusalami was magnanimous enough to hand over power in May 1999. For the better part of the 52 years since independence, the Northern have ruled for more than 85% and wondered why even pretentiously progressive Northern elements lament about poverty, unemployment, and dearth of infrastructure among others. The Integrity Group asserted that it was the oil money sourced from the Niger Delta Region that provides more that 90% of our national budget and the Northern have benefitted more than any other part of Nigeria in terms of federal appointments, allocation of oil blocks, using the oil money to develop their major cities including Abuja. The Deputy President of the Group Comrade John Idumange warned that nobody should stand on the second tenure bid of President Goodluck Jonathan – who since assumption of office, has been working hard to revamp the core sectors of the economy. By his determination to transform, his commitment to attract Foreign Direct Investment, his vision to put the nation on the path of moral rectitude and to embark on aggressive infrastructural development, President Goodluck Jonathan surely deserves a Second Tenure in office. The Integrity Group called for the implementation of the Review of citizenship laws of the country and decried a situation whereby a State Governor – who himself is not an indigene of Lagos State could deport a section of people to their States. The group said the Governor of Lagos State should apologize to the Igbos for that dastardly act. The Group concluded that Northern leaders have actually robbed Nigeria and the worst victims are the oil producing Communities in the Niger Delta Region. The Group closed the meeting by telling members to rededicate themselves to engage in aggressive grassroots campaign to ensure the actualization of the second tenure bid of President Goodluck Jonathan.
