NORWAY — Frost Farm Gallery will hold a First Friday reception, meet and greet the artist on Friday, July 5 from 5-8 p.m. The new show, titled "Explorations: A Duet Exhibition," will feature paintings by Anne Richter and sculptural ceramics by Dan Greenfeld. Anne’s art career has spanned many media, especially ceramics and printmaking. Drawing has been a key practice evidenced by her collection of sketchbooks over the past 50 years. Her current work is paintings on paper, and she considers her paintings to be a synthetic narrative, a dialogue among shape, color and line. "The figure and ground share their own reality, not unlike the way memory distorts and reforms events," says Anne. “I have had a life-long interest in flat pictorial space in which the artist maintains, rather than punctures, the picture plane.” Her subject matter comes from her life’s experiences. Dan’s principal area of focus is larger scale sculptural work with a functional component. One series consists of classically shaped jars with metaphorical components such as Greco/Roman niches, and openings that reveal a smaller functional vessel within a larger, nonfunctional vessel form. Dan is also fascinated by the artistry, and the historical, cultural and sociological references of Japanese tea bowls, and was particularly taken by the form and hand-built nature of the historic Raku bowls of Kyoto. Dan chooses the wood-fired surface for his ceramics because of its complexity and variety, and the way it reflects the primal nature of the process. The works, fired for three to four days, are a receptacle for the wood ash that, carried by the flame, settles on the pieces, melts, and then becomes a natural glaze. The different sides of each piece reveal the path of the flame and ash during the firing’s transformative process. His two-chamber wood kiln, named “Athena” for the Greek goddess of, among other things, craft and wisdom, is fired three times a year. Dan says, “Athena exacts a price for each successful firing, but the rewards are evident in the work she produces.” Those attending the First Friday opening will also enjoy live jazz keyboard by Mike Maurice. The show is free and open to the public. The exhibit and sale will continue at Frost Farm Gallery, located in the historic David W. Frost farm, 272 Pikes Hill in Norway through Saturday, July 27.
