NOT AS DARK A DAY AS MIGHT BE THOUGHT South Gower bravely met the challenge posed by the league leaders, who last year were some 3 divisions higher. It would do scant justice to a very good Morriston side to say that they were flattered by the score. On the other hand, it would do no justice to the efforts made by South Gower to say that they deserved such a margin against them. From an early line-out, a good drive led to a penalty that sent Gower into a good position. Good tackling at the outset in defence was personified by the back row, where Nick Edwards made two crashing hits. A top-class break from Ollie Jenner and Ollie Blandford was released for right wing Rhydian Morgan to burst over for the game’s opening try after just 6 minutes. Unfortunately, another 4 minutes delivered a try by Morriston’s sheer pace out on their right, converted. There was a period of scrappy play from both sides, but all remained positive until one loose tackle gave the opportunity to apply pressure until they could scramble over from close on 20 minutes, adding the conversion again. Life was becoming tough against this very speedy side and it was only another 3 minutes when an attack was snuffed out on the line, only to see a simple chip through and the visitors could only reflect on the cost of a single missed tackle as the hosts scored and converted again. Immediately, a simple handling error was snapped up for a gift try and conversion. Defence was becoming desperate and every error seemed to cost dearly. In due course, a tip in the line-out caused a yellow card for the Morriston lock and the penalty put South Gower on the attack, a good take in the line from Roger Gill being fed to skipper James Wedlake who scored a fine try. Another unforced error sadly meant a scrum on the line and the home number 8 was not touched in going over for yet another try, meaning a half-time lead of 35-12. However, the pressure was clearly telling. The second half opened with a storming ten minutes from the home side, 3 tries and 2 conversions coming in 10 minutes. However, these did not go without response, as a penalty from Ollie Jenner took them to within 5 yards and a superb drive from the pack went all the way for James Wedlake to answer yet again and show the visitors’ spirit. The line-out and scrum continued to function well and the backs looked dangerous at times. More illegal moves at the scrum allowed the fly half to drill in to the 5 metres and pressure was exerted, scrum half, fly half and back 5 forwards all creating chances, but being kept out. Once again, simple errors were responsible for Morriston to show their very pacey backs for some straightforward run-ins. Richie Yates came on after 65 for Rob Gadd and Tom Gwynn and Hussain Nadhar also arrived to add their efforts. The attacking play of the home team was now constant as the gap in class and experience showed and resistance began to crumble. Although the telling against was eventually 80 points, the reply of 19 was only just short of a bonus point and, although disappointed, South Gower should focus on the many positives, be thankful that we have got this fixture out of the way and look forward to taking on our arch enemies Fall Bay next week and continue to build for the future Team: Nathan Leach, Charlie Heard, Ollie Blandford, Carwen Huw, Rhydian Morgan, Ollie Jenner, Rob Gadd, Joe Tingle, Ben Davies, Nick Edwards, James Wedlake (Capt), Roger Gill, David Edwards, John Mansfield, Bari Davies, Subs: Justin Edwards, Richie Yates, Hussain Nadhar, Tom Gwynn.
