NOT SURPRISED BUT ALWAYS SADDENED WHEN AMERICA SHOWS US THAT BLACK LIVES DON’T MATTER: Professor John H. Bracey in his lecture on “The Cost of Racism to White America” (https://youtube/watch?v=psnIvnzWNx4) succinctly captures the essence of “our” endemic and systemic cancer that we identify as racism. We live in a country/nation that was constructed to oppress Blacks and other people of color. Legal scholar Derrick Bell introduced the term “interest convergence” which states “The interest of blacks achieving racial equality will be accommodated only when it converges with the interests of whites” (Delgado and Stefancic). How has this case proven this theory? Melissa Harris Perry referenced the Dred Scott case during her powerful tribute to Mike Brown and the dozens of Black men who have been slaughtered in this country. Mr. Scott was advocating for his rights as a human being and [c]hief [j]ustice [t]aney stated that “Blacks had no rights whites were bound to respect.” Many others (scholars, artists, and everyday people) have stated their analysis, observation, and ethnographic compositions concerning their own experiences with racism, the police, academe, etc. This is a nation that CELEBRATES genocide (Columbus day and Thanksgiving). What do we really expect? Revisiting Bell’s theory, I ask you, can we provide an answer to what Derrick Bell suggests concerning the benefits of what America as it relates to the equality of Blacks? What do whites (those that sit at the helm of this political novella) stand to gain from exercising the idea of true equality (for blacks)? This quote captures my ideas at this time; “Whites simply can not envision the personal responsibility and the potential sacrifice inherent in Professor [Charles] Black’s conclusion that true equality will require the surrender of racism-granted privileges for whites” (Delgado and Stefancic). So, here we find ourselves back to this age old question and the politics concerning white privilege. Most are in denial, particularly those that are benefiting from the race granted opportunities that flood America’s gate. What are we expected to do?
