NOTES FROM TODAY’S SERMON BY PASTOR STEPHEN KING, “A MOTHER’S STORY” (Luke 1:5-19): Elizabeth comes to us, and she is introduced to us typically, as an image of lifelessness, isolation, desolation, reproach, shame, and disgrace. And, it looks like, based on this text, that this is how her story is going to end. But I’m glad today that God exercises editorial privilege, because after being childless, after being hopeless, and after being humiliated for many years, Elizabeth’s dominant story reasserts itself. Elizabeth in her barrenness, in her lesser story, thought that she was too old to expect a change in her situation—but here’s what I like about God. It’s just when you think it’s too late that an angel will show up. An angel will show up just when you’re getting ready to throw in the towel. Just when you’re thinking that you didn’t hear God. Just when you’re thinking that you missed what the Lord said. Lord is in the business of re-editing, reordering, rewriting our story. God re-edits Elizabeth’s lesser story to bring it in line with the dominant story. Elizabeth who was barren is now getting ready to have a son who will be called John. That’s when Elizabeth shouted. She said, “God has shown me favor! God has taken away my reproach among humanity.” The lesser story of her life was brought back in line with the ongoing call that was on her life from the beginning. In other words, what God is saying through Elizabeth to us today is that I can produce. You need to thank God for every angel that has shown up in your life.
