NOW BUSTIN OUT ALL OVER WHITE COUNTY! HEARTS-A-BURSTING aka STRAWBERRY FLOWER (Euonymous americana) This is one of the most interesting of wildflowers...a shrub actually. It has totally inconspicuous little flowers not more than a 1/2 inch in diameter that bloom in mid-Spring. ...sort of creamy green-white in color....these are their flowers in springtime...hardly noticeable, right? And the other photos were taken in September...when the extremely dramatic seed pods burst open in all their brilliant red color... Stems are green and square. Botanists cant decide whether this shrub is lately-deciduous or a true evergreen...it is a member of the Celestraceae or Stafftree family. It likes a moist, fairly well-drained soil in the company of both hardwood and coniferous trees...our White-Tailed Deer and Cottontail Rabbits love the leaves...and Wild Turkey consume the seeds. The brilliant seed pods appear in late August to early September. I have found several of these along FS-244 near Raven Cliffs and also near Whippoorwill LN in Sautee.
