// NUS Press director and Singapore public art chronicler Peter Schoppert has an interesting theory — that the history of Singapore art is really all about space. Museum space, arts housing space, The Substation’s former garden space, etc. He brought it up, of course, while we were chatting inside the newest space in town, the Centre for Contemporary Art. Yes, thanks to NTU, Gillman Barracks is now officially complete. Well, sort of. We’re still waiting for more F&Bs. Still, it looks promising. We finally heard new director Ute Meta Bauer’s thoughts about the centre’s direction. It was heartening to hear her repeatedly underscore art as “knowledge production” and describe the centre as “a laboratory and a space to experiment”. Equally heartening was news that art critic and former Substation artistic co-director Lee Weng Choy will be deputy director and senior curator. //
