NUTRITION TIP: From a fitness point of view, antioxidants are very important because they destroy free radicals that are created by exercise and stress. These nasties have been shown to interfere with muscle growth in the recovery phase of a workout by inhibiting the initiation of muscle protein synthesis (turning protein into muscle) and also decreasing insulin sensitivity in the muscles. Studies have shown that taking anitioxidants post-workout may help to restore muscle protein synthesis after a workout and also help to improve glucose uptake into the muscles, which is also anabolic (it supports muscle growth). ALA (alpha-lipoic acid) is a good antioxidant to take post-workout – about 100-300mg is a suitable dose. Other antioxidants that you can consider adding to it are Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Zinc and Green Tea Extract. – Fabian.
