Naikan is a structured practice of looking at "the whole picture". It often begins with someone or something with whom we have a complaint. By reviewing its three questions, we may find it easier to detach emotion from the event or person. Compassion for others and ourselves is a natural development. Naikan is also an answer to the old question, what do you do when caught between a rock and a hard place? (One answer... go up.....shifting the from being caught in the conflict to broader considerations of life and humanity.)
