Nairalanders, I urgently need your advice on certain issue thats generating a row in our building. Who should be responsible for house maintenance? Landlord absolute reaponsibility or shared among the tenants. Our building has four flats with the landlord occupying one. When i moved in few years back, those tenants i met find it nothing wrong in sharing the responsibilities with the landlord. Problems ranging from fixing electrical problems, water well and pumps issue,leaking roof, flower garden maintenance, sweeping of the compound and even land use charges to Lagos state govt are being shared among the tenants. I felt Land use charges should be absolute duty of the landlord but we paid too. Recently, our water well and pump got bad and a huge bill of upto 20,000 naira each was shared for each tenants for the well and pump before it can be fixed. One of the newest tenants vowed never to pay because he felt thats absolutely the landlord responsibility. My confusion now is, is the guy right or wrong? He maintained he bears the maintenance cost of his property he rented out in another city and not his tenant.
