Name: Lee Kyung-ju (이경주) Age: 17 Occupation: Junior at Danwon High School (Class 10) Siblings: A younger brother Lee Kyung-ju (17) loved to dance. She belonged to the dance club from her first year of high school. Her dream was to be a member of a dance troupe that worked with famous musicians. She grew up to have frequent minor arguments with her mother. This was because se was more interested in extra-curricular activities and had many talents, meaning school ended up taking a back seat. However, she had a firm set of values. At school she was a caring students who looked after her classmates as well as the younger students. On the morning of April 16 her mother heard the news of the Sewol Disaster and tried to call Kyung-ju but her phone was turned off. At 10.16am Kyung-ju borrowed the phone of her classmate Jang Joo-ee (17) to send her mother a text, “Mom, the water is rising.” That was the end. Her other prayed for Kyung-ju’s swift return. She returned to her mother’s arms in 8 days, on April 23. This was one day before her parents’ wedding anniversary. And Sepember 29 was Kyung-ju’s birthday. Her mother Yoo Byung-hwa (40) is currently the deputy-director of the Sewol Family Planning Group (in charge of counselling and basic supply distribution). A Letter From Her Mother My beloved daughter Kyung-ju. I call you again and again but there is no response. April 16 is the day that everything stopped for your mother and father. Our pretty Kyung-ju, are you still asleep at your friend’s house? You were always by the side of friends in need. I remember how frustrated I would feel when you were grizzly with me, I would think that you were a bad daughter who never listened, but actually you cared deeply about your father, your little brother Gil-yong and me too. There are so many things that we still had to do and wanted to do together, but you are no longer by my side. I still can’t believe it. You spent 10 months in my belly and came out into the world like an angel, I still remember when you first called me mom, when you started elementary school, when you graduated middle school and they are all happy memories. I should have treated you better. I should have said I love you more often. I should have held onto you tightly and not let you go. These countless regrets are making it impossible for me to forgive myself. I’m sorry. I’m so, so sorry. I love you. I love you very, very much. If I ask you to return as my daughter, you will, right? Our beautiful princess Kyung-ju. I will gather strength and try to live a life that I can be proud of when I see you again. Watch over me. I love you. My daughter Lee Kyung-ju. A Letter From Her Cousin To the sorely missed Kyung-ju. Kyung-ju, how are you? I miss you. You’re doing well right? Stay well and eat all your meals. You have to live a good life in heaven. Enjoy the company of your friends. And happy birthday. To Kyung-ju. Love from your cousin.
