Mafabi in 2012 took part in a hotly contested party presidential election which he lost to Gen Mugisha Muntu, amidst allegations of vote rigging. Nandala’s supporters also threatened to quit the party when Muntu dropped him as Leader of Opposition in Parliament recently. Nandala on Friday took to social media and posted what was widely interpreted as his rejuvenated endeavours to stand again for party president. He posted: “When I contested as the FDC Party President, this was my pledge and I still believe in it: “To build a robust party, founded on timeless values and ideology, buttressed by reliable grassroots structures, accountable to society, empowering its party leagues and steered by credible, people-focused, result-oriented leadership that positions FDC as the party best placed to make Uganda a haven of political, socio- economic justice and progress.” Two years after the election, the Muntu-commanded FDC had waded through murky waters of financial constraints and a remarkable amount of friction within the party. Most of his decisions were met with outright resistance from party executives some of who threatened to exit the country’s leading opposition party. “FDC under the leadership of Gen Muntu is on its way down; I am going to consult with my electorate. The party must sit down now and look into whether we’ll be working with a person like Muntu,” charged Aruu County MP Hon Odonga Otto, moments after he had been appointed by President Muntu as Shadow Minister of Internal Affairs. He was eyeing the PAC docket. “This business of aimlessly rebranding the party to replace strong leaders with lukewarm and boardroom politicians will bring the party down to its knees,” Otto was quoted as saying. Most of FDC executives have also opposed Gen Muntu’s diplomatic style, saying he needs to emulate Besigye’s belligerent behaviour to take on a combative NRM government. While Muntu claimed during his campaigns that he would mobilise money for the party, FDC is now in shambles – without money to facilitate even administrators. Mafabi’s remarks yesterday, accompanied by an undated campaign picture of himself, appeared to resonate well with most of his fans who poured supportive messages to his candidature. “The party has lost the steam under lacklustre Mugisha Muntu. The likes of Katuntu have become complacent. Actually president Museveni now sails without opposition at all because at the helm of the FDC is an ally. The touch of Hope of a peaceful transition from movement tyranny which was held by FDC has burnt out. We are now trapped in the dark with no hope of light soon,” noted one Jude Nalulu “Only if God can bless Uganda with a president like you,” retorted another Felix Kamalha.
