Narcissism Noun excessive interest in or admiration of oneself and ones physical appearance. PSYCHOLOGY extreme selfishness, with a grandiose view of ones own talents and a craving for admiration, as characterizing a personality type. Ive have come across a few narcissistic people in the last couple of years and it amazes me every day. The sad thing is that most of them sugar-coat it with something else. The most disturbing trend about this is that it seems to be more and more prevalent under independent church leaders. It would seem they start their own church under the pretence of doing Kingdom work. They bamboozle their followers into believing that it is all about the Kingdom and Gods plan but the actual truth is that it is all about them and the power they think they have. (Power hungry). I then start to question the motive behind starting an independent church. Is it really because they wish to serve the Lord better or is it simply a case of not wanting to be accountable to anyone or anything? Accountability brings perspective and keeps one in check not to focus on the evil triplets named ME, MYSELF and I. Unfortunately this is not only in our own country but around the world. I can think of a couple of so-called big ministries that comes down to narcissism once you remove the topcoat of nonsense that is being fed to followers. The next question that comes to mind is: Are people following a person or are they following God? The reason for this question is simply because should there be any criticism of the leader, the followers would immediately come to his/ her defence in the strongest manner. How dare you question his/ her motives? There is really no problem to differ in styles when it comes to worshipping God. We were all created differently and with different preferences in life. We must provide space for everyone to worship God according to their spirituality. But if you simply create a new independent church just because you are of the opinion that your way is the absolute answer, then there is a problem. I have met quite a couple of these narcissistic ministers or pastors. These observations mentioned above are things experienced first hand. I can mention at least 3 names immediately but will refrain as to not be accused of defamation of character.
