Nathan Marino Transformers 4 is the fourth instalment in the Transformers series, and stars Mark Wahlberg as Cade Yeager, an inventor who finds an injured Optimus Prime whilst searching for broken materials to sell to get his daughter, Tessa (Nicola Peltz), into college. The film is set a few years after the Battle of Chicago, and the human race has grown fearful of the Transformers, and the order goes out for them to be exterminated, and bounties placed on their heads. KSI leads this attack, and uses the bodies and minds of the Transformers to create new ones with the aid of the new element Transformium, essentially what they are made of. However, the KSI enlist the bounty hunter Lockdown to their cause, who is after Optimus Prime because the Creators want him back. While Michael Bay uses his ‘never seen before’ explosions technique, the film is much darker than the previous three. For example, Optimus has gone from protecting the humans to wanting to kill a variety of them, and Crosshairs, one of the Autobots, continually tries to overthrow leadership of the Autobots. These new themes are said to continue with any future films, in which the producers said that Transformers 4 was the beginning of a new series of films. The plot is also a downfall for the film; there’s no secrets being revealed about their race, like the past films, and there’s no conspiracy’s intertwined into the plot, like in Transformers 3, where they say the reason we haven’t been back to the Moon is because of the Decepticons, which made it more interesting. However, the only part of the Transformer world that comes into play in the film is the Seed, a weapon of destruction used by the Creators to wipe out the dinosaurs sixty five million years ago and cover the Earth in Transformium. The use of the Dinobots, huge Transformers that transform into, you guessed it, dinosaurs, are a refreshing taste to the series. Even though they don’t really talk, their presence in the film suggests that the future films may have more to do with the comics and books about the Transformers, meaning fans may get to see a final Transformers film starring one of the major figures in the Transformers universe, Unicron. However, viewers, and myself, where not impressed with the lack of screen time the Dinobots scored in the film; they starred for only 15-20 minutes out of 2 and a half hours of film. This was another thing that people didn’t like; even though Transformers 2 and 3 were long like this film, at least it was interesting throughout with little to no lulls in action. Number 4 fails in this, but tries to fill it with one liners and attempted comedy stints, which sometimes work but other times fail and even made the scenes worse. However, fans of the series will love the film for its continual use of action packed fights and new perspectives during the film. Personally, I believe that Mark Wahlberg and Nicole Peltz are a good alternative to the continual use of Sam Witwicky, who some believe may have added a bit of a comedy streak to it. But it is refreshing to see a new cast on set for this film, and since Wahlberg and Peltz have already made their interest in another film known, we may be seeing them in future films in the years to come. Personally, I enjoyed this film for what it was; fan fiction, created for the fans because of the fans influence over the producers. Critics will rate it low because they will anyway; the people who will love this film are the fans, including myself, and anyone who goes into the film with an open mind to anything that could happen. I give this film a 7/10* *most critics didn’t even rate this film above 40%.
