National AIDS Memorial Grove Young Leaders Scholarship Program (YLSP) Deadline: September 16th (Application and Personal Statement) & September 30th (Essay), 2013 (RECEIVED BY) Amount: $1,000 - $2,500 Available to “to current high school seniors and college undergraduates who have demonstrated an active commitment to fighting AIDS” “Essays must not exceed 1,000 words in 12 point Arial font, and must be double-spaced, and address the following: (1) How has your life has been impacted by HIV/AIDS? How have your knowledge and understanding of the epidemic influenced your educational or extracurricular pursuits and/or public service? How might they influence your career path? (2) Young people in the 21st Century have never known a world without HIV. Nevertheless, they may be unaware of the overt discrimination and stigma that made AIDS of the deadliest and most tragic illnesses of the 20th century. You may wish to familiarize these issues as you address the questions: How do discrimination and stigma continue to fuel misconceptions and stereotypes that perpetuate high-risk behaviors? How do they impact access to treatment and care for those who are infected? How do these issues most manifest among young people at highest risk of infection? (3) Early AIDS activists and community leaders brought about profound and positive changes that affected entire communities, and the way in which healthcare is accessed and delivered. They tackled contributing factors to infection and mortality such as poverty, discrimination, homelessness, mental illness and addiction. What are the challenges which must be faced by 21st Century activists, and how would you confront them? (4) Finally, please discuss the role of the National AIDS Memorial Grove.
