National Association of Cuban Journalists in Exile – NJ/NY Delegations Colegio Nacional de Periodistas Cubanos (E) Del. NJ/NY 300-77th Street North Bergen, N.J. 07047 (201) 941-8791 – [email protected] August 8, 2014 Ms. Cami Anderson Superintendent of Newark Public Schools Dear Anderson: At the beginning of May 2014 we were informed that in the lobby of Central High School (CHS) inNewark, there is an image of the international terrorist, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, with two quotes on it. The first quote is from “Che” Guevara and it says: “There’s no such thing as liberators, the people will liberate themselves.” Nevertheless, it should be noted that Guevara died in Bolivia trying to ‘liberate’ theBolivian people. The second quote: “Most people don’t wanna be the King or the Queen for that matter people want freedom.”This one is from Ras Baraka, former Principal of CHS, and recently elected Mayor of Newark. In May several Cuban organizations from New Jersey and New York area sent letters to the main officials in the office of the State Board of Education, and in the office of the Superintendent of NewarkPublic Schools. But there was no clear response to our request. Even on July 9th a commission from our community met with Mr. Brad Haggerty, Assistant Superintendent of Newark Public Schools, and with Mr.Ruben Roberts, Director of Community Affairs. But one month later the situation remains the same. Maybe none of you has become aware that the display of a Communist figure in a public school constitutes a form of Communist indoctrination to the students. Moreover, the display of the image of someone who brutally repressed and killed Cubans, like “Che” Guevara, constitutes an affront to the Cuban community. Therefore, we as journalists, knowing how harmful such display is for American students, insist on its removal as soon as possible from the lobby of CHS. In case you need more information about this matter, please grant us an interview, and we will gladly meet with you. On behalf of the National Association of Cuban Journalists in Exile we remain, Sincerely yours, Professor Antonio A. Acosta Israel Abreu Ana Cueto-Acosta President Cuba Commission Executive Secretary Cc: Mr. Brad Haggerty Ass’t Superintendent of NPS
