National Forum: “Belize’s commitment to Eradicate Violence against Women, Femicide and Human Trafficking”, to be held on the 10th of December in the Best Western, Biltmore Hotel in Belize City, Belize It is important to Belize as it is important to the entire region to improve the quality of life for its population and eradicate extreme forms of violence against women, girls. With a focus on prevention, Belize is preparing itself to better address the challenges of the 21st century with the support from the lessons learned from the last two decades. This Forum represents a commitment of the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Human Development, to bring together all actors to commit to real impact on the eradication of violence against women and human trafficking through specific actions and targeted interventions. This is especially fitting as today commemorates Universal Human Rights Day and the closing of the 16 Days of Activism. This Forum creates a space for the exchange of experiences, best practices and highlights some of the actions that are already in place to prevent violence against women and human trafficking. This fora is a recommitting of cooperation between institutions and organisations in the framework of the BA1 Project: Prevention of Violence against Women, Human Trafficking and Femicide in Central America. The key note speakers are: the Hon. Minister of State, Mark King; the Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. Judith Alpuche; Assistant Country Representative from the United Nations Populations Fund, Mrs. Erika Goldson; Director of the Women’s Department, Mrs. Ava Pennill; and Project Development Specialist for the BA1 Project, Ms. Natasha Leite. The National Forum is not just an event. It is part of a process that started long before the event itself with the commitment of local and national actors and the engagement of the Belizean society to end violence against women and human trafficking. The BA 1 Project: Prevention of Violence against Women, Femicide and Human Trafficking is also the materialization of one of the components of the prevention element of the Central American Security Strategy. The project establishes three main results in all Central American countries: (1) Enhance regional and national coordination for the implementation of prevention and assistance actions on violence against women, trafficking and femicide; (2) Improve capacities of the regional, national and local institutions on the prevention and assistance of violence against women, trafficking and femicide and (3) Develop local plans and comprehensive assistance mechanisms on violence against women, trafficking and femicide implemented in the selected territories. Belize has seen this as an opportunity to improve significantly its response to violence against women and human trafficking. This project will strengthen the current response through the participating of all actors including government agencies, law enforcement, non-governmental organisations and interested groups and persons. The prevention of violence should be a concern for everyone as violence impacts us all. This project is a coordination effort between the Belizean Government, UNFPA, IOM and SICA with the support of the Governments of Finland and the Netherlands.
