National Geographic chooses Mayo to Launch the National Genographic Project in Ireland; The National Genographic Project is a multi-year global research initiative that uses DNA to map the history of human migration. Mayo County Council’s Enterprise and Investment Unit, together with National Geographic will host a public event in the National Museum of Ireland - Country Life on Sunday evening 23rd June. The highlight of the event will be a public DNA cheek swab, where 100 local volunteers will have the opportunity to trace their family history as far back as 2,000 generations. Their ancient ancestry will be revealed through the Genographic Project, a landmark not-for-profit study that has involved more than 550,000 people around the world since it commenced in 2005. Genographic Project scientists have travelled the globe to collaborate with tens of thousands of indigenous people, whose genetics are particularly significant in determining human migratory routes. Just recently, the Genographic Project launched Geno 2.0, a new DNA testing kit that uses advanced technology to give the most relevant ancestry results possible. This public swab event in Mayo using Geno 2.0 is the first of its kind in Ireland and aims to utilize new technology to provide additional insight into the genetic makeup of this Western region of Ireland. We are seeking up to 50 individuals from Communities around Mayo to be a part of this study. We would be delighted if through the County Community Forum a selection of individuals can be nominated which would be representative of all corners of the County. The main criteria for the nominees are: the Individual will need to be available to attend the public event at The National Museum of Ireland- Country Life on Sunday evening June 23rd at 5.30pm to have their cheek swab administered. A select group of well known Mayo residents has already agreed to participate in this important research project ahead of the public event, and their Geno 2.0 results will be revealed at the public event on Sunday 23rd June.
