National Park Service officials and representatives from environmental organizations met this past Friday to discuss past, present and possible future oil and gas operations inside the Big Cypress National Preserve. Not an easy topic. But in addition to the possibility of new federal wilderness inside the Big Cypress (something SFWA has pushed for a long time) - we also got some very good news on the oil front. Apparently the Burnett Oil Company, who was seeking to conduct seismic exploratory operations on 366 square miles (about 235,000 acres) of the preserve (nearly a third of the preserves 720,000 acres), is lowering their sights considerably. NPS officials told us that a revised request they received last week will be for about 110 square miles of the preserve. If you havent seen this video yet - have a look. Its an example of what a vibraseis truck (also known as a thumper truck) - able to send vibrations more than 2 miles underground - looks and sounds like in action. A few seconds of the video gets the point across. Make sure your sound is not turned up. These machines can weigh more than 60,000 pounds and are loud. https://youtube/watch?v=4El6U0XTNS0
