National Preparedness Month: Family Emergency Planning - TopicsExpress

National Preparedness Month: Family Emergency Planning Templates I will admit I am not a big fan of templates or “fill in blank plans”. That said, I will also admit they give us a fantastic starting point. My biggest issue with the templates; is people just look for the blank(s) and fill it in without ever reading or understanding the plan itself. However, a pre-plan template collects the data one may never consider and begin them on a track to developing a plan that does work and everyone can understand. The same goes for the Continuity Of Operations Plans (COOP) or Business Continuity Plans for your agency or workplace. For emergency plans for work or family there are two things you MUST know above everything else; 1) Who is important when everything is “gone”? and 2) How do we communicate with them? If you start your plan development by asking yourself those questions you are on your way to figuring out the rest of the plan. In business continuity planning or COOP, you must review what are absolute minimum things we MUST do to keep the business up and running and begin figuring out the who, what, when, where and how from there. Family emergency plans are slightly different. They are focused totally on survival and peace of mind. This is fundamentally important to you because if you don’t have peace of mind about your family, how effective will you be at work or anywhere else? Once your family is safe and secured, you can then be a good neighbor or employee. Take a few minutes, really that is all it takes, and look at this template to begin your plan. It will give you peace of mind and it may begin the conversations you need to have to build the rest of your plan. Take care of yourselves and each other! ~Dusty ready.gov/sites/default/files/documents/files/Family_Emegency_Plan.pdf
