National Suicide Prevention Month Daily Update: Something can hurt so much it feels like it tears a hole in the heart. Ones life is mangled. Devotion and service no longer hold meaning. The cause is no longer worth our sacrifice, and the senselessness of it all leaves one deeply angry. - Edward Tick, War and the Soul Today is Wednesday, 10 September. We are now 1/3 of the way through National Suicide Prevention Month. In 2012, within the span of 30 days, Virginia Military Institute lost two Alumni to this silent war. Rich Hauben and Kevin Price, both combat Veterans. One on Active Duty, the other a Reservist. Both carried unseen wounds back from their service in the Middle East. Both had endured experiences in combat that had left a hole in their hearts. Both had fought these demons until they felt overwhelmed and powerless. Both committed suicide. Both left grieving families struggling to understand what had happened. Those who have never seen the horrors of war can never fully understand that no one who enters a combat theater returns home the same. We cannot unsee the things we have seen. We cannot simply “suck it up and drive on” when sounds and smells trigger painful flashbacks of memories we wish we could erase. This I the war that rages inside many of our Veterans today. They may not carry physical scars, but they are wounded nonetheless. They are wounded in their souls. And these wounds can be fatal. For 8,030 Veterans last year, they were fatal. For Rich Hauben and Kevin Price, they were fatal. These are real people, real families, battling an injury for which there are no medals, and little assistance from the government that promised to provide them care. Please help Silent War Foundation reach out to these Veterans and their families. Please help us reach our goal of $10,000 this month to provide treatment for these Warriors. Please go to silentwarfoundation.org and make a donation today. Please help us to Heal our Warrior’s Souls.
