Natural Hunka Kaboom’s dream of running for Akron City Council has fizzled. Kaboom was one of five local candidates disqualified from running in the Sept. 10 primary Monday by the Summit County Board of Elections because of insufficient signatures on their nominating petitions. Kaboom is a regular at Akron council meetings and made headlines last year when the metal walking stick bearing his name was left behind in City Hall and mistaken for a pipe bomb. He was a Democratic candidate for Ward 5. The other candidates ruled off the ballot were: Mike Adams, another Democratic council candidate for Akron’s Ward 5; Michael Rogers, a Democratic candidate for Akron Ward 6; Keith John Elrod, a Democratic candidate for Akron Ward 9; and Michelle Baker, a Democratic candidate for at-large Cuyahoga Falls council. Robert Frank DeVitis, a Republican candidate for Akron council’s Ward 2, withdrew before the Monday morning board meeting. The disqualifications and withdrawal mean that Councilman Jim Hurley will be unopposed for the Ward 2 council seat and two Republican incumbents, Jeff Iula and Carol Ann Klinger, will hold onto their at-large seats in the Falls without a challenge.
