Nature Awareness 5/20/2014 - Penguin Most of us have at least seen pictures of penguins, if not the live animal. They are a popular choice displayed in most zoos, and the local St. Louis Zoo has a terrific exhibit call the Penguin & Puffin Coast for those looking to spend more time with this bird... although I believe it is temporarily closed this season for the building of the new polar bear enclosure. By definition, penguins are aquatic, flightless birds that live almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere, especially in Antarctica. Highly adapted for life in the water, penguins have counter shaded dark and white plumage, and their wings have become flippers. It is also interesting to note that they spend about half of their lives on land and half in the oceans. As a totem, the penguin teaches grace in emotions and actions, as well as endurance. Penguins display great patience and persistence in the wild, too, especially while attempting to rear young. And, they have been shown to endure great extremes, specifically in temperatures. Because of the ability to live so well on land and in the water, this animal also teaches those wanting to learn how to move freely in life, to be more aware, and to change the course of events that no longer suit our chosen paths. The penguin also helps navigate the realm of emotions and the depths of our unconscious because of its strong relationships to the ocean and various depths while hunting. Are you ready to dive into the depths of your own heart and mind? Do you understand where your emotions are coming from? Penguin will show you the balance of moving freely with an awareness of your choices and actions. Symbolism: grace in emotions and actions, thoughtfulness, attention, endurance in extreme circumstances.
