Nature Awareness 6/6/2014 - Sponge Sponges, which at one time were thought to be plants, are the simplest of all living animals. Unlike most animals, which move throughout their habitat, sponges are immobile, living attached to solid surfaces and depending on water flow for all their needs. In other words, their aquatic environment is directly linked to the type of sponge living there. The sponge is shaped to maximize the water flow through itself due to the nature of its habitat. And, most sponges are found in environments with stable temperature regimens. It is also worth noting that sponges are remarkably efficient filter feeders. As totems, sponges have a few traits... keeping their symbolism simple, much like the rest of them. And, of course, one of the main traits associated with the sponge is simplicity, for obvious reasons. Sponges are also associated with efficiency for their energy usage and techniques, environmental sensitivity, and emotional release as it has been noted that letting the water pass through them is much like feeling the emotions without becoming attached or enmeshed within them. Meditate on the sponge today. Do you feel that your life has become overly complex? If so, it is time to let go of those things that to do not directly serve you. Are you living as efficiently as you could be? If not, perhaps it might be time to do a full reorganization. Are you overly enmeshed in your emotions? If so, let them pass right through you. Acknowledge their presence and them let the intensity float away. Symbolism: simplicity, efficiency, environmental sensitivity, emotional release.
