Nature & Me II. ~ Wild Pigeon Follows Me In Botanical Garden Zagreb Brief history (Repetitio est mater studiorum) From the past, Botanical garden was and still is a part od Botany Department of the University of Zagreb. University of Zagreb is the oldest in Croatia and one of the oldest university in the South East Europe, founded in 1669 as Neoacademia Zagrabiensis by Emperor King Leopold Habsburg and was run by the Jesuits. The Academy in Zagreb remained until 1871 as the institution of higher education in Croatia. Development of various Department of university, especially Department of Botany appeared the idea of the need for establishing of the Botanical Garden very soon. Few years after Bishop Josip Juraj Strosmayer proposed (1874) to the Croatian Parliament need of establishing modern university. Strossmayers proposal became a legal basis for the founding the University of Zagreb, and by Decree of the Emperor Franz Joseph in October 1875 started modern University. The idea of building Botanical Garden started a year later - 1876. Its been 13 years since the initial idea. Thus it is considered to be 1889 year of establishment of Botanical Garden, and Head of Department of Botany - professor Heinz its founder. From the past to today, many valuable monuments of arhitecture and lansdcape arhitecture have been preserved. Botanical Garden are under protection whether its about keeping the old landscape arhitecture or buildings created in the Art Nouveau period and later. Botanical garden is an opened book under sky to students who have Botany as course at the undergraduate study, and rest for soul of anyone who like to enjoy the stunning nature in the heart of City - in Zagreb Welcome
