"Navigating through storms" Scripture James 3:4-5 Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. Observation The rudder on a ship directs the ship in fine conditions and in storms. It is a relatively small part of the ship but is incredibly important. The safety of the ship and the people on it, is dependent on the work of the rudder. An efficient rudder will help a ship navigate through difficult times. Likewise, our tongues can help us navigate through relationship storms, difficult circumstances and conflict situations. The rudder can take the ship away from trouble or send it into trouble. Our tongues can make for smooth or stormy sailing, how we respond with our tongue is critical. The interesting thing is that, we as pilots can take the direction we choose, we can respond like Jesus would or we can respond differently. When we respond like Jesus we pilot our lives well, we avoid unnecessary storms and avoid forest fires. Our tongues need to be piloted well, we can respond like Jesus would and as we relate to people we can imagine that it is Jesus who we are talking to. To avoid the storms we should encourage instead of discourage, build people up, refrain from gossip and communicate with God frequently.
