Navy researchers are working on a machine that creates gasoline - TopicsExpress

Navy researchers are working on a machine that creates gasoline from seawater. Most of the carbon we release into the atmosphere ends up in the oceans, which has adverse negative effects on sea life. This machine retrieves that carbon and converts it into fuel. This could mean a closed loop fuel system where we dont mine any more carbon from the ground, but simply reuse the carbon weve already emitted. Youre still burning fuel but are doing so without adding any more carbon to the environment. The machine runs off of electricity and could be powered by solar or nuclear. Nuclear aircraft carriers, for example, could create jet fuel onboard. Or large floating solar arrays could harvest sunlight and convert it into high density fuel. I am a huge fan of electric cars, but airplanes still really need to be powered by fuel and represent a major chunk of our greenhouse gas emissions. If we can convert sunlight and seawater into jet fuel, wed basically have solar powered jets. :-)
