Ndine wolimba, says Kanene CONVICTED musician Clifford Dimba alias General Kanene says he is a strong person because he was brought up in the compounds. Dimba yesterday said God knew why he was serving a prison sentence for defilement. He was speaking after the Supreme Court dismissed his bail application pending appeal hearing against the 18-year jail term slapped on him after being convicted of defilement. The subordinate court heard during trial how Kanene on unknown dates but between January 31 and February 1, 2012 in Lusaka had unlawful carnal knowledge of a 14-year-old, but had pleaded not guilty Ine ndine olimba. Ninakulila mu komboni. So vilivonse vikacitika, its okay (I am strong, I was brought up in the compounds. Whatever happens to me, its okay). God knows, said Kanene, while skipping as police officers and his lawyers escorted him to a vehicle, before being driven back to prison. Supreme Court judge Albert Wood, who heard the matter in chambers, dismissed the bail application, saying Kanene would not have served a substantial part of his 18-year jail sentence by the time the court would hear his appeal in less than two years time. Judge Wood ruled that Kanene would remain incarcerated until his case comes up for an appeal hearing possibly next year. After the bail ruling, one of Kanenes lawyers, Tresford Chali, said he would appeal against the ruling before a full bench of the Supreme Court next week. What was happening today (yesterday) was the bail hearing application before a single judge. The bail application has been refused. But we have got a right of appeal to the Supreme Court full bench. We will appeal by next week. I think its a route worth taking, Chali said. He dismissed reports that Kanene was on hunger strike. These reports that Kanene collapsed and he is not eating are not true. My client is in high spirits and he is coping very well, said Chali.
