Neds Walker Journals The Waiter came back with his coffee and asked if he would like to see a Menu. Cree asked what the house special is and the Waiter told him Trout Almandine. Cree looked at the Waiter and asked. “That is a French Dish.” the Waiter said. “Yes it is and our new cook is featuring that this evening.” Cree asked. “Is he French?” The man nodded yes. Cree asked. “Would you go back and tell the cook that I would like to talk with him and yes I will have the Trout.” Cree sat and drank his coffee and a man showed up at his table. Cree stood up and said in French. My name is Cree Walker and I was the Marshall from Gold Creek. I would like to tell you that I have not had Trout Almandine since I was in Washington DC many years ago. I fell in love with the dish and I had hoped that someday I could have it again. You have made a dream come true.” The man broke out in a big smile and told Cree. “I thank you very much and I truly hope you will like it. If you are a fishing person I will write the recipe for you and you can have it anytime.” He introduced himself as Andre and he was very happy to meet a person of class who could appreciate good food. He went back to the kitchen and the Waiter came out and poured more coffee. The Waiter then recommended a white wine with his dinner and Cree asked for a taste of it but bring a glass of water so he could get the coffee out of his mouth. In a few minutes the Waiter returned with his water and a bottle of white wine and a glass. Cree took some of the water and rinsed his mouth out and then took a drink of the white wine. He told the waiter to leave the wine. He soon had his trout and enjoyed every bite and the wine was excellent with it. He was finishing his dinner when he realized a woman standing by his table. In a defensive tone she asked. “Are you Marshall Cree Walker from Gold Creek?” He was amazed what a beautiful woman she was; she was the type of person who took your breath away just looking at her. She was tall, he guessed about five foot nine, and she had light brown hair and the prettiest eyes and smile that he had seen in in very long time. He answered. “Yes I’m Cree Walker former Marshal of Gold Creek.” She said. “My name is Lilly Bonet and I understand you were in charge of getting rid of the Gold Creek Saloon. What do you mean the former Marshal?” Cree laughed a bit and asked if she would like to sit down, she did. He told her what transpired between him and the Federal Attorney. She said. “Well I was ready to make you an offer on the place. I had heard about a year ago that Murdock wanted to sell it and I went down and took a look at it. Murdock showed me around and then told me I could run it and take 75% of the gross and he would take 25%, but he added a string to the deal, which was, if I moved in and slept with him I, could have the entire amount that was made each month but he would retain ownership. I told him that I don’t make deals with strings attached. He had that Bailey guy and three of his deputies escort me and my body guards out of town. I was very happy to hear that you had come in and killed Bailey and had Murdock in jail. Then Murdock did the world a favor when he blew his brains out.” Cree looked at her and asked. “Would you like a cup of coffee or a drink?” She said coffee. The cook came out and asked in French. “How did you like the dinner Mr. Walker?” Cree smiled and told him it was great. The cook then said. “I have a special desert for you to try. It is chocolate cake with a cherry filling and topping.” Cree told him. “Bring two pieces, one for me and one for the lady.” Lilly eyes got wide and she said. “It sounds like it is fattening and I don’t need that.” Cree told her. “We will get fat together.” She laughed. When the cake arrived along with it was two glasses of Brandy. Cree asked. “Did you understand the French?” She responded in French and told him. “I had spent a couple of years in France and learned it there. I just don’t have anyone to talk to keep up on it.” Kilpatrick showed up and told Cree. “You are a hard person to find. I have gone all over this town looking for you.” Kilpatrick laid Cree’s Marshal Badge on the table and said. “The Federal Attorney Andrews would like you to have this back and he is sorry for what he said to you.” Cree told Kilpatrick. “You can tell the fat bastard if he is truly sorry he can hand it to me and apologize in person.” Kilpatrick said. “He wants you at the meeting tomorrow at his railcar, the Judge and two Accountants will be there to look over Murdock’s books.” Cree told him. “I’m not going in that railcar and sit there all day. The place smells of stale cigars and rot gut whiskey. If he wants to meet we will do it here at this hotel. I will make arrangements to get us a room to meet in. Tell him to keep his cheap cigars and rot gut on his train.” Kilpatrick said. “I can’t tell him that.” Cree responded with. “If you don’t do it I will.” Kilpatrick told Cree. “I don’t know if he will or he can get off that train car without help. He cannot sit a horse and most wagons cannot haul him or he can fit in them. He would have to walk and that would be an all-day effort on his part.” Cree told him. “The walk could do him some good.” Kilpatrick said. “You will get us a room to meet in?” Cree nodded yes. Kilpatrick left. Lilly looked at Cree and said. “You are as straight forward as me.” Cree told her. “I guess we will have no problem getting things off our chest and being up front with each other.” She looked at him, smiled and asked. “Have you ever read anything by William Shakespeare? Cree told her. “I sat out a winter in Kansas when I was a sheriff over there and there was 4 to 5 feet of snow on the ground and getting around was difficult. I spent the winter reading Shakespeare, why do you ask?” Lilly said. “A group arrived by train today from New York and they put on plays. Tonight they are doing King Lear and I would like to know if you would go with me? Cree looked at her and said. “I would be honored to go with you.” She smiled and said. “You would be the first man I had ever gone out with while I have lived here. I have been asked by men with a lot of money and the only thing they really wanted was some bed time and I fix them breakfast. You don’t strike me as that way.” Cree asked. “What time does it start? And if we have time I will make arrangements for a meeting room before we go.” The cook came back and handed Cree a recipe and asked how the cake was. Cree and Lilly both said it was excellent. They parted and the two of them went out to the Lobby and Cree arranged a meeting room. They left and went to the play. They rode in a black carriage drawn by two matched paint horses. The carriage had a place on the back where her two body guards could ride. They arrived at the theater and went to her reserved seating area. They were brought two glasses of brandy. They both enjoyed the performance and talked about it as they went back to the hotel. Lilly asked. “What are you doing for dinner tomorrow night?” Cree said. “If they finish business tomorrow and its early I may go back to Gold Creek, if not then I will stay over and go back the following morning.” She said. “Why don’t you stay over either way and come and have dinner at my house. I can send the carriage for you and we will have dinner say about 7:00 PM.” Cree thought I would be stupid to pass up an offer like that and he told her. “I will stay and have dinner with you.” They arrived at the hotel and she leaned over and kissed Cree on the cheek and said. “Thank you for being such a gentleman.” Cree smiled at her and said. “Thank you for such a relaxing evening.” He watched as they pulled away from the hotel. He went up and went to bed.
