Need some quick ideas on putting your home in the Holiday mood? Check out yesterdays column from the Times Herald. Simple moves help bring the holidays home Looking for a few quick fix-ups to freshen up your home before the guests stop by during this holiday season? While it seems like there is always something needing to be done, some things can be accomplished easily before your next scheduled event. One way to freshen up the look of your home is to rearrange your furniture. Empty the room as much as possible of accessories and artwork, buy some furniture glides to make the job a bit easier, and arrange the room around a new focal point, the fireplace, the view, the Christmas tree. Create conversation areas. Float furniture more toward the center of the room. Use area rugs to help define the space, and now might be a great time to clean the carpet. Play around with the arrangement and rethink old ways of using the space. Use bookcase shelves to showcase your collectibles as well as your books. Or, for the holidays, put away your usual displays, and replace them with your collection of Santa Clauses, or Nutcrackers or Holiday Villages; something along these lines is not only lovely to look at this time of year, but is a great conversation starter. Holiday linens this time of year are a very quick and inexpensive way to change up your dcor and brighten up a tired space. Pillows for sofas and chairs are available in many colors and patterns; there is bound to be something that fits your dcor. Throws, too, are an easy way to bring holiday colors and patterns into your home, carrying your theme throughout your home. And what a cozy way to warm up a space! A small area rug at the door is not only welcoming, but will also help catch some of the dirt on shoe soles. Lighting is very important during these dark days of winter. Check around, both inside and out, and be sure your burned-out light bulbs have been replaced and check to see if your lamp shades need to be cleaned or replaced. Candles add ambiance, a sense of warmth and are beautiful this time of year. Check out realistic battery-powered candles; they flicker, and there is virtually no chance of them catching something on fire. Also, some come equipped with a timer, so you won’t even have to worry about turning them off. These small changes and additions will add just the right touch to brighten up your home for the holidays. Jan Zimmer is an interior designer from St. Clair. Contact her at janzimmerinteriors@gmail.
